Paul Laurence Jones III (aka Paul Lawrence Jones III) came to prominence in the 1980s as writer and arranger, an early credit being with the Spinners on their album “Can’t Shake This Feeling” in 1981. Later that year he teamed up with Kashif and Morrie Brown for what they called Mighty M Productions, working with Evelyn King and Melba Moore through a series of collaborations that would include Evelyn’s “Love Come Down” and Melba’s Love’s Comin’ At Ya”.

In 1985 Paul stepped forward as a solo artist for a self produced debut album “Haven’t You Heard”. Freddie Jackson and Lillo Thomas joined Paul on vocals for a single “She’s Not A Sleaze” while the UK soul scene best remember the LP for “There Ain’t Nothin’ (Like Your Lovin’)”. That takes Paul to his second and final album for Capitol Records, “Underexposed” originally released in 1989 and presented again here by Expansion.

It features three singles, “Cut The Crap” (featuring Janice Dempsey), “Make My Baby Happy” and “I Ain’t Wit It”. The first was a ballad that left its mark with ballad fans in the USA while in “I Ain’t Wit It” the Mighty M sound had given way to Paul’s contribution to what would be around the corner, new jack swing. – Expansion
