‘Soul Classics 24 Hours A Day’ 28 tracks here are all taken from original 7” singles. Let’s start with the finest voice from the males, namely Walter Jackson, whose 1973 Brunswick side, ‘Let Me Come Back’ is a rare nod by the man to the northern scene. Blue-eyed Billy Watkins has another northern favourite in ‘The Ice Man’ – a 1965 Era Records outing – and, indeed, most of the selections would sit happily at home under the banners of Blackpool, Wigan or Manchester. Classics abound, starting with ‘Harlem Shuffle’ and ending with Deon Jackson’s delicious, self-penned ‘Love Makes The World Go Round’, with such notables in between as Jackie Wilson’s ‘I Get The Sweetest Feeling’, the Capitols’ ‘Cool Jerk’, Gene Chandler’s ‘Nothing Can Stop Me’, the Artistics’ ‘I’m Gonna Miss You’, Otis Leavill’s ‘Love Uprising’, Major Lance’s ‘Sweeter As The Days Go By’, Tyrone Davis’ ‘Can I Change My Mind’… hits every one. Not, of course, a selection of the startling or even hard to find but, as part of the ‘Backbeats’ series, a neat enough addition.- IN THE BASEMENT
