Northern Soul and pop music have often been uncomfortable bedfellows but Paul Anka’s Wigan Casino anthem “I Can’t Help Loving You” is testament to the fact that you don’t have to be black to sing a soulful dance track (and, it’s a whole lot better than Jimmy Breedlove’s attempt at the song).

At the height of its popularity Anka’s true credentials were covered up as Johnny Caswell and the disc remains a rarity to this day. However, today’s dancer’s prefer Anka’s more sedate finger clicker “When We Get There” which has soared in popularity and price, now topping the £200 mark.
