Northern Soul fans may have missed out on Kent’s two Goldwax Story CDs and our single artist releases due to the preponderance of ballads on them. This is a CD especially for them – all the Goldwax dancers on one disc.
Ady Croasdell’s compilation includes half a dozen previously unreleased recordings that Goldwax completists will have to have. They are very classy ones too – both Phillip & The Faithfuls tracks are wonderful. In addition there are two Spencer Wiggins tracks recorded at Fame by Goldwax and never legally released before, including the sensational ‘Let’s Talk It Over’ which is an accepted Northern Soul anthem from acetate plays.
Other Northern favourites include Dorothy Williams’ ‘The Well’s Gone Dry’, Percy Milem’s ‘Call On Me’ and James Carr’s ‘A Losing Game’ and ‘That’s What I Want To Know’. Other big soul names include George Jackson, Dan Greer, the Ovations and Spencer Wiggins.
The master tape version of the Ovations’ ‘They Say’ is so much better than the popular vinyl cut that it almost sounds like a new record. Modern soul is represented by Wee Willie Walker’s stunning ‘I Don’t Want To Take A Chance’. – Ace Records
