Step By Step with their current in-demander “I Always Wanted To Be In The Band” taken from their lone 1976 Brunswick LP of the same name.

The 12-piece ensemble from Milwaukee, Wisconsin were fronted by Lil’ Johnny Gee who had recorded a solo 45, “My Love”, for local label Cuca (from Sauk City) ahead of joining the band. As Step-By-Step they recorded the rare “kid soul” single “Time After Time”, also for James Kirchstein’s Cuca logo, in 1975. The 45 earned them an audition with Nat Tarnopol of the Brunswick organisation and Nat signed the young group on the spot. “I Always Wanted To Be In The Band” was also released on the Spanish Zafiro label, but our chosen B side, “I Ain’t Never Gonna Let You Go”, has only ever been previously available on the original, rare, LP.
