Freddy Briggs – The Lost Soul Of – Defrost Me CD (Outta Sight)

FREDDY BRIGGS is perhaps best known as the former husband and business partner of the superb soul songstress Kim Tolliver. However, that is doing him an injustice. As a writer he penned “Strung Out Over You” for the Dells and Mavis Staples’ first solo single “You’re Driving Me Into The Arms Of A Stranger”.  But best of all were his collaborations with long-time friend Darryl Carter for the legendary Margie Joseph.

Despite carving a career primarily as a songwriter/producer, and part-time Cleveland cabbie, Briggs was also an accomplished singer. His acknowledged masterpiece “Sound Off” for Don Davis’ Groove City imprint is a genuine soul classic and is featured here as a bonus track. But it his 1973 near-mythical solo LP Defrost Me that we explore, in its entirety, for the first time. This cult classic makes its CD debut after disappearing into obscurity almost 40 years ago, largely due to the financial problems of record label GSF. Restored to its former glory the album finally gets the respect and reverence it deserves although its truly hideous cover has been hidden behind our outer slipcase… quite right too!- Outta Sight
