Roy Ayers has been one of the best loved jazz funk artists over the past forty years. He was most prolific in the 70’s and early 80’s releasing up to three albums a year on the Polydor label, recording some of the most memorable jazz funk classics of that period.

He was born Roy Edward Ayers in Los Angeles California to a musical family. Living near Central Avenue LA, Roy was exposed to musicians at an early age and befriended the upcoming Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Roy made his first recording with Curtis Amy in 1961 and his solo debut ‘West Coast Vibes’ for the United Artists label in 1963.

Roy played in Jack Wilson’s band before joining Herbie Mann for four years recording his hit ‘Memphis Underground’. This led to Roy making three albums for the Atlantic Label in the late 60’s. In 1970 Roy formed Roy Ayers Ubiquity and signed to Polydor Records, where he would record twenty one albums over the next twelve years.

In 1978 he recorded the “Lets Do It” album. This includes his second version of “Sweet Tears” another jazz funk classic with a driving groove and the uplifting “You Came Into My Life’ , which was recently covered by Louie Vega’s Elements Of life. We are delighted to present this album on CD for the first time outside of Japan, re-mastered from the Original masters, in our classic album series. This is the first of at least four of his late 70’s early 80’s albums that we are re-issuing on CD. –   Soul Brother
