Detroit was and is the American “Motor Town”. However, the hometown of the three largest American automakers is also one of the most important birthplaces of the music we call “Soul”. The economic boom had brought many black Americans to the steel and car metropolis, and the demand for musical entertainment in the local clubs and also for records by the most successful musicians was high. At the same me “Soul music” began its triumphal rise at the end of the 1950s.

Detroit had its first big soul star in Jackie Wilson, from under whose shadow new talents soon emerged. Vocal groups like The Miracles (with Smokey Robinson), The Supremes (with Diana Ross) and The Marvele es made a giant leap from Doo Wop to this new black pop music, which made its way to the top via constant hits, extensive tours and a huge TV presence to become the only serious rival of the Bri sh invasion around the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Aretha Franklin grew up in Detroit, but the reverend’s daughter began developing her jazz roots before becoming the “Queen of Soul”. The soul legends Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, who already proved their excep onal talent with their debut albums, also were an early part of the success story of “Motor Town Soul”. Many singers made great singles, but remained One-Hit- Wonders, as exempli ed by the recordings of groups such as the Pyramids or soloists like Vivian Collins. However, they all helped make Detroit the Mecca of Soul of the 1960s.
