Gregory Hines was best known as a dancer and actor. During the mix-70s he became the lead singer of a West Coast rock band Severence, then in 1981 featured alongside Phyllis Hyman on Broadway in “Sophisticated Ladies”, a music revue on Broadway in tribute to Duke Ellington. Just after this he met Jimmy Cobb, a former drummer with Miles Davis on “Kind Of Blue”. Jimmy Cobb invited Gregory to participate on his solo album “So Nobody Else Can Hear”, the title track of this 1983 album becoming a soul classic on the UK scene and previously reissued on Expansion.

The Gregory Hines album we present here was his only solo recording and stems from a duet “There’s Nothing Better Than Love”, a No.1 Billboard r&b singles chart hit with Luther Vandross from Luther’s album “Give Me The Reason” two years prior. “Gregory Hines” the album comes complete with everything you would expect from a Luther Vandross production from that period, and was originally released on the same label, Epic. Check the credits and you’ll see the dream team of Luther Vandross and Marcus Miller contributing to songs with all star cast of musicians and backing singers helping the album to sparkle with the best of its day. The album features one of Luther’s best songs “Love Don’t Love You Anymore”, though the singles were “That Girl Wants To Dance With Me” and “You Need Somebody”. – Expansion
