A great little collection dedicated to “forgotten souls of a forgotten city” – the lesser-known talents who bubbled under on the New Orleans scene of the 60s and 70s – but who never reached the same fame as their bigger contemporaries! The styles here often move a bit more into a Northern Soul mode than traditional New Orleans tunes – and the city’s familiar chunky rhythms are replaced by more upbeat grooves and vocal modes that almost remind us more of the sound of Detroit or New York in the 60s. But that difference is a great one to our ears – as this set really gets past the overdone cliches of other New Orleans collections – and offers a really fresh take on the Crescent City sound!
