A long overdue first-ever CD release for the 1975 debut album by Memphis’ premier soul harmony group, and the only other act to be signed to Isaac Hayes’ short-lived Hot Buttered Soul label beside Ike.
“Everybody Wanna Live On” was the first of two albums cut for Hot Buttered Soul during its two-year existence. The album spawned two R&B chart hits: ‘The Traveling Man’ and their sensual revival of the Shirelles’ ‘Baby It’s You’; ballad successes at a time when disco was increasingly becoming the major force in black music.
The whole album can be seen as something of an extension of Isaac Hayes’ own recordings. He arranged, conducted and produced it, as well as playing keyboards and using his own band the Movement as the session musicians.
Still made up of many of the group’s original members, the Masqueraders are still a mainstay of the live music scene in Memphis. Their international reputation will ensure strong demand for this reissue, which restores the album to catalogue after a 36-year absence. – Ace Records
