Through the years, Kent has turned out some of the finest soul sides. To mark the ongoing commitment to soul fans, the label brings you the original Kent discovery, The Magic Touch, on a compilation packed with brand new finds, old favourites, a dip into Dynamo’s catalogue and some previously unissued sides. In the mid-80s, Kent’s intrepid researchers disappeared into the Scepter/ Wand/Musicor vaults with a mission to root out the gems. They came back with Melba Moore’s The Magic Touch, and once vinyl copies found their way into the hands of DJs Keb Darge and Harboro Horace the soul fraternity were hooked. It’s a dynamic and vital must-have tune, and soon became the record of the year in 1986. That same year, at Kent’s fifth 100 Club anniversary, 500 limited edition singles were pressed and given out to club punters. As you might expect, they’re well sought-after now. The Magic Touch also became the title song of an LP that followed soon after but this album differs completely from the original LP. Kent has kept the theme, but brought you a new selection that will surely bring you out in goose bumps. From the gritty, uptempo beats of Inez & Charlie Foxx’s You Fixed My Heartache to the mellow This Time Around by S.O.U.L – the typical S.O.U.L fan might be thrown back by the group’s soulful tracks contained here, they’re best known for their funky, jazzy sides, released on our sister label BGP. Debra Anderson’s Funny How We’ve Changed Places is probably the rarest track appearing here. Sleevenote writer Harboro Horace carried out his own investigation and found none of his circle of vinyl-addicted associates had even heard of it. It’s thought that this is the original, and was later covered by Dee Dee Warwick. The 27-track line up offers tracks from Marie Knight, Dee Dee Turner, Bethea The Masked Man &The Agents, Dean Parrish, Tommy Hunt, Barbara & Brenda and many more. But how could Kent resist slipping in a track from the raunchy torch singer Eartha Kitt, and the Italian version of Jimmy Radcliffe’s soul classic Long After Tonight Is All Over? It’s all here…in true Kent style. –  Ace Records
