Most soul fans will tell you Detroit’s Westbound and Eastbound labels were the city’s most significant for black music in the 1970s – and they would be right.
Ace has released many acclaimed CDs of Westbound repertoire of which “Good All Over” is both the latest and one of the best. It might well be subtitled “The Collectors’ Westbound” featuring, as it does, some of the rarest recordings in the label’s catalogue.
The major hits may be on other CDs, but the quality of these rarities – including a generous nine previously unissued or never before reissued sides – is on a par with everything that came out of Armen Boladian’s company during its ten-year existence.
Several of these tracks were recorded in Memphis using the facilities and musicians at Hi Studios.
All tracks are mastered from fresh transfers of original Westbound tapes.
Many of Westbound’s best-known names are featured here, including Denise LaSalle, the Detroit Emeralds, the Magictones and the Fantastic Four – all of whom enjoyed lengthy and artistically satisfying associations with the label. – Ace Records
