The New Jersey-based Carnival label has always been revered and collected among the Northern Soul fraternity since records such as the Lovettes’ ‘Little Miss Soul’ and the Pretenders’ ‘I Wanna Be’ first went massive in the early 70s.

The UK “newies” scene of the 80s took to the label as it had many great sides that were overlooked in the rush to find Wigan stompers in the 70s. Tracks by Phil Terrell, Barbara Brown and the Metrics were huge in that era. The quality of the songs and productions from label owner and major jazz talent Joe Evans was always very high: not a turkey in sight. Lesser-known songs by big artists such as the Manhattans, Lee Williams and the Cymbals and the Pretenders are regularly unearthed or revived for a new lease of life on the ongoing scene.

It’s 14 years since our three-volume label story was last issued and this gives a chance for those who like “Dancers Only” and newer 60s soul recruits to enjoy a fantastic stable of soul talent- Ace Records
