JOHNNY MAESTRO was born John Peter Mastrangelo in New York in 1939. He was the original lead singer of The Crests and enjoyed a run of hits with the group before pursuing a rather lean solo career in 1960. In 1965 he signed to Scepter Records with a new line-up of The Crests and released his Northern Soul anthem “I’m Stepping Out Of The Picture” which has been a staple of the scene since it was first played over 40 years ago. It is as popular today as ever, perhaps even more so, with it’s powerful big city beat ballad sound suiting today’s more subdued dancefloor. The flip side “Afraid Of Love” is an altogether more uptempo number that has been sadly overlooked. With prices reaching $2,000 for a mint stock copy this first ever “original coupling” reissue is well overdue.
